A 21st Century Farnsworth House

What does a 21st Century version of Mies van der Rhoe’s exalted Farnsworth House look like? Thanks to Manhattan architectural firm Desai/Chia, we now know. The blissfully beautiful LM Guest House in upstate New York was built for a family requesting “an analog” of Farnsworth, and lucky for them (and us voyeurs), they got it in spades.

A modest 2,000 sq feet in size, LM, like Farnsworth, retains a low, horizontal profile with an all-glass exterior. But unlike Farnsworth, state-of-the-art green technology—geothermal heating and cooling; radiant floors; motorized solar shading; photovoltaic panels; rainwater harvesting; and sensitivity to the lay of the land—was thoughtfully employed to reduce the carbon footprint of an all-glass house.

“The LM Guest House celebrates the beauty of the surrounding landscape,” says Desai/Chia. Agreed—but we think it more potently celebrates the enduring, timeless beauty of Farnsworth House.

Headliner

At 83, Milton Glaser still knows how to stay design-relevant. The only graphic designer to have ever been awarded a National Medal of Arts (in 2009), he was also making news at ICFF 2013 recently. The Barcelona carpet brand Nanimarquina launched a collection of 3 wool carpets designed by Glaser, each bearing earth-toned, cross-hatch graphic patterns with tribal overtones. The star of the rug trio was Shakespeare in Africa, featuring the head of The Bard himself. Of his desire to reference a literary icon on a carpet, said Glaser, “I wanted to take two things that have no relationship with each other and do what art does: to unify the apparently unrelated.” Mission accomplished, we say.

Two Really Cool Homes.. 

Sometimes in life things happen that just make you feel good about yourself.. Today in what seemed like a few months of just making ends meet, struggling upstart company, and other emergencies, unplanned events, then all of the sudden you get a perfect day.. Today everything seemed to go right.. The new 85,000 line of credit came in, store ortders totalling over 15,000 thousand dollars were done over the weekend, and other pending matters seemed to fall into place nicely along expected lines.. so to everyone out there.. I say Smile and make tioday a good day..

Well changing the subject below are two really nice modern homes I just happen to feel real good about and since I have decided to make today about feeling good and just having a smile on my face I will share them with all of you in the hopes they do the same for you..

Black Exterior and White Interior Home in Hollywood Hills

This stunning home in Hollywood Hills: Nakahouse by XTEN Architecture. Home location at Los Angeles, California, USA with South and West are views of the Beechwood Canyon; to the East is a protected natural ravine, with a view of Griffith Park Observatory in the distance. Here are the home design with black exterior and white interior. The interior was completely reconfigured however, and the exterior was opened up to the hillside views and the natural beauty of the surroundings. A large terrace was added to link the kitchen and dining area with the living room, with a steel stair leading to a rooftop sundeck. Terraces were also added to the bedroom wing and the upper master bedroom suite to extend the interior spaces through floor to ceiling glass sliding panels that disappear into adjacent walls when open. The contrast between the black exterior and white interior of the house is intentional and total. While the exterior is perceived as a specific finite and irregular object in the landscape the opposite occurs inside the building. The rooftop deck is the perfect place to enjoy sun in perfect privacy. I think the only thing that this perfect black-and-white symphony lacks is a swimming pool but anyway the house is amazingly stylish.
